The Oncology Rehabilitation Team at Exeter Hospital has specialists trained in the treatment of cancer related physical impairments such as:

Loss of function due to pain or weakness

Surgery for cancer may result in pain, physical mobility limitations or changes in function.

Lymphedema

Lymphedema is the accumulation of protein rich fluid anywhere in the body. Individuals treated for cancer are often at a higher risk for developing lymphedema in the area affected by cancer.

Cancer-Related Fatigue

A subjective symptom of fatigue that is experienced by nearly all cancer patients; fatigue can range from mild to severe and may have either temporary or long term effects.

Bladder Dysfunction

Voiding issues can result from prostate or gynecological surgery or rediation and may include incontinence, constipation or pain.

Oncology Rehabilitation Treatments Include:

  • Exercise to promote strength and maintain function
  • Aquatic rehabilitation as appropriate
  • Massage and stretching to affected areas
  • Complete Decongestive Therapy for Lymphedema
  • Endurance training
  • Pelvic Floor muscle rehabilitation

Cancer Well-Fit Program

The Cancer Well-Fit exercise program is designed for people who are currently in or are within one year of cancer treatment at Exeter Hospital. The program is staffed with licensed physical therapists to assess individual exercise and conditioning needs.  Classes consist of instruction in in flexibility, strengthening and cardiovascular exercise with appropriate monitoring by trained exercise professionals.

Studies show important health benefits of exercise during cancer care including decreased fatigue, decreased nausea, less anxiety & depression, improved strength/endurance and immune system function.

This is a free program offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30, 10:15, or 11:00 in the Oncology Rehabilitation department.  The program duration is 2 x week for 10 weeks. Additional sessions are available for a small fee.  A medical clearance is required to participate in the program.
