Perinatologist

A subspecialty of obstetrics concerned with the care of the fetus and complicated, high-risk pregnancies.

MaterniT21

A blood sample from the pregnant woman (a non-invasive procedure) in order to detect an increased amount of chromosomal material for example, chromosome 21 (Down Syndrome).

Level II ultrasound

An ultrasound focusing on specific areas of the baby’s anatomy such as brain, heart and other organs that is performed by the Perinatologist who will explain results/findings during the procedure.

Amniocentesis

A procedure, performed by the Perinatologist, to remove a small amount of fluid from the amniotic sac that surrounds the fetus.  This fluid is then used for testing for various chromosome abnormalities, genetic diseases or fetal lung maturity depending on your medical diagnosis or family history.

Chorionic villi sampling (CVS)

A procedure, performed by the Perinatologist, to remove a small sample of tissue from the placenta.  The tissue is then used for testing for various chromosome abnormalities or genetic diseases depending on your medical diagnosis or family history.
