Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ is a comprehensive blended educational program developed by AORN’s expert perioperative nurse authors, based on the latest, evidence-based Guidelines for Perioperative Practice. This program combines a standardized evidence-based online curriculum and textbook readings with hands-on skills labs and a clinical practicum led by experienced perioperative nurses” (AORN, 2019).
At Exeter Hospital we use The Periop 101 Program to prepare nurses to work in the surgical environment. The program is used to create surgical nurses that are safe, professional, and work within the guidelines set forth by governing bodies and hospital policies. The program builds on the fundamentals of nursing to create Perioperative Nurses capable of sound clinical decisions related to the care of surgical patients. Surgical Services offers Periop 101 periodically in the Spring depending on need.
The course consists of 6 units that cover all the learning objectives; over 30 competencies; quizzes based on reading assignments; and a final exam. The program is a mix of online modules and hands-on clinical training with an assigned preceptor. Periop 101 takes several months to complete, usually at least 6 months. The nurse must complete all modules and score an 84% or higher on the final exam to pass the course.
