About Oral Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the surgical specialists of the dental profession. After dental school, oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete a minimum of four years of hospital-based surgical residency training that includes rotations in general surgery, anesthesia, trauma, and emergency services.

This demanding program prepares the oral surgeon to practice the full scope of the specialty, which includes the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of defects and injuries related to the function and aesthetics of the oral and maxillofacial regions. While most oral and maxillofacial surgeons are known for removal of wisdom teeth, these surgical/dental specialists provide a broad range of services from reconstructing shattered faces, to surgically correcting misaligned jaws, to cancer surgery of the neck, face, and mouth.

Dr. Buchanan, a board certified oral surgeon, see’s patients for the diagnosis and management of facial injuries, congenital and acquired jaw deformities, impacted teeth, and jaw and facial pathology.
