Pediatric Surgery
Taking care of our patients is never more important than at our Pediatric Outpatient Surgery Center. That is why our staff is committed to making each visit to Exeter Hospital, Inc. as comfortable and stress-free as possible for both children and parents. We will take the time to answer any questions you or your children have, and ensure that everyone understands what to expect. To make your stay more comfortable, we offer:
- A pleasant "pedi play" area with TV/DVD player, toys and books, and children's furniture
- A pediatric visit program that allows parents and children to tour the Outpatient Surgery Center and ask questions. For more information and to schedule a tour, call (603) 580-7568.

One parent/guardian is allowed to accompany your child into the operating room. You will be given a white jumpsuit and will be allowed to stay with your child until she/he falls asleep. You will then be asked to return to the waiting room. The surgeon will come to speak with you following the procedure.
We have a liaison available to answer your questions.
As soon as your child is awake enough, parents are allowed into the recovery room. However, other circumstances may delay this. For example, if there is another patient that is critical, or if the recovery room is very busy, we may ask parents to wait a short time.
Younger children usually get the IV started after they go off to sleep in the operating room. Older children and children with medical conditions may get an IV prior to surgery in the admitting area.
On the day of surgery, in the pre-surgical area, the anesthesiologist will come to greet you and your child, and will answer any questions or concerns you may have. The anesthesiologist will also discuss with you in detail what anesthesia will be most appropriate for your child.
If there is any question as to whether your child is ill prior to his/her surgery, you should contact the primary physician and the surgeon’s office. One or both physicians can help determine whether surgery needs to be postponed.
Again, the primary physician, as well as the surgeon, needs to be notified of any health changes in your child. The decision to postpone surgery will be made depending on the circumstances.
Absolutely! It is encouraged for them to bring a doll, blanket or any other cherished item, so that when they go off to sleep and wake up, it will be with them. We do request, however, that electronic devices such as cell phones, PSP or other internet ready devices be left at home.
You may take photos of your child in the pre-operative area after signing a consent form. No photos are allowed in the operating room.
