"Preventable, Treatable, Beatable! What You Need to Know about Colorectal Cancer"
Not counting skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer foundin both men and women in the United States. It is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States when men and women are considered separately, and the second leading cause when both sexes are combined. Fortunately, colorectal cancer death rates are declining, in large part due to improvements in early detection and treatment. Screening tools are available which can detect colorectal cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage, or even remove polyps before they can become cancer. There are also simple life style choices you can make to reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer and keep your family healthy.
During this lecture, David Chismark, MD, FACS, of Core General and Vascular Surgery in Exeter, will answer questions and discuss prevention strategies, screening guidelines, and the latest advances in treatment options available at Exeter Hospital. You won't want to miss your chance to be part of this informative discussion.
Free and open to seniors who live in Plaistow, Atkinson, Danville, Hampstead, Kingston and Newton

Diabetes: How To Play Defense
when: March 9, 2010 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm where: Exeter Hospital - North Conference Rooms phone: (603)580-6668
Currently there are 57 million people in the United States living with pre-diabetes, a condition in which your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not yet so high to be classified as type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes is diabetes that starts during pregnancy with blood sugar often returning to normal after delivery. Without intervention, patients with pre-diabetes or gestational diabetes are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
Fortunately, diet exercise and other lifestyle choices can make a big difference by returning blood sugar levels to normal and therefore preventing the development of type 2 diabetes.
Join us as Deb Browne, MD, and registered dietician Jane Hackett share their expertise in the prevention and management of gestational and pre-diabetes, including risk factors, blood sugar numbers and the important role of nutrition, weight management and exercise. Snacks and recipes will be provided. To register you can call one of our helpful resource representative at (603)580-6668.

March Topic: Celiac Disease and Osteoporosis... Is there a Connection?
Speaker: Jane Hackett, MA, RD, LD, CDE
Celaic disease is one of the most common inherited disorders. It is estimated that 1 out of every 133 people in the US have celiac disease. Studies show that people suffer from this disease for an average of 10-11 years before being diagnosed. If untreated , it can result in many nutritional deficiencies such as osteopenia and osteoporosis. The only treatment for CD is a strict gluten-free diet for life. At our March 18th. support group we will explore the tests used to determine if you have celiac disease; what the term "gluten" means; where it is found in our food; nutritional concerns; CD and gluten free diet resources; the many wonderful new food options for people on a GF diet; and, of course, recipes and GF food samples to taste. This is your opportunity to receive reliable information about this increasingly prevalent diet and get the tools to avoid "celiac meltdown".

Cardiovascular disease, defined as disease of the heart and blood vessels, is the leading cause of death in the U.S. Atherosclerosis is the build-up of fatty plaques in blood vessels known as arteries and is the most common type of cardiovascular disease.
When atherosclerosis occurs in the arteries of the heart, it is called coronary artery disease (CAD) and if left untreated leads to heart attack. When it occurs in the arteries outside the heart, such as the legs and pelvis, it is called peripheral artery disease (PAD). Diagnosis of PAD is critical as people with PAD have a 4 to 5 times higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
Learn about atherosclerosis from the experts: Stephen Gemmett, MD, and Jessica Sutherland, MD, will discuss the common risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, current medical treatments and procedures for both CAD and PAD. To register you can call one of our helpful resource representative at (603)580-6668.

During this lecture, Christopher Roseberry, MD, FACS, of Core General and Vascular Surgery in Exeter, will answer questions and discuss prevention strategies, screening guidelines, and the latest advances in treatment options available at Exeter Hospital. You won't want to miss your chance to be part of this informative discussion.
Free and open to the public.
